College of Petroleum and Minerals Engineering

The College of Petroleum and Minerals Engineering was established at Tikrit University in 2010 (1431 AH) under ministerial decree, making it the second college of its kind in Iraq. The establishment of this college holds significant importance for the region due to its unique characteristics, including vast oil fields and the presence of the largest refinery for petroleum products in the area.

Departments

  • Department of Petroleum Process Engineering, which specializes in processing and refining petroleum products after extraction.
  • Department of Petroleum Systems Control Engineering, which focuses on centralized control and management of petroleum facilities.

The college commenced its academic activities by admitting approximately 110 male and female students and has since graduated six cohorts of engineers during the academic years 2013–2014 through 2018–2019, with a total of 339 graduates.

The college aims to provide specialized engineering cadres for the petroleum industry and supporting industries. It represents a valuable addition to higher education and to the country, given the high demand for this specialization by official institutions due to the significant shortage of qualified professionals. Moreover, Iraq possesses some of the world’s largest oil reserves, whose development requires a large number of technical experts across various disciplines. Until recently, there were no colleges capable of preparing specialists on the required scale.

The establishment of this college constitutes a major qualitative advancement for higher education in Iraq, as it provides rare and highly needed specializations in different areas of the petroleum industry. Furthermore, the college is expected to expand both vertically and horizontally to encompass additional rare and in-demand fields in the near future, alongside the establishment of specialized research centers that will effectively contribute to supporting this industry with advanced studies and applied research.
